Unlocking Africa's Climate Action Potential: The Private Sector's Crucial Role

Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, and Africa stands at its forefront. Despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, the continent often bears the brunt of climate impacts — dragging down economies, lives, and communities. African nations have responded with robust Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), outlining their plans to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. However, a significant hurdle remains: financing these ambitious goals.

Tanzania

Chanzi reduces organic waste and provides an affordable source of animal protein

Chanzi, a GSIV Tanzania finalist, aims to drastically reduce Tanzania's organic waste while providing an affordable source of animal protein to livestock. By doing so, the company contributes to reducing the animal feed industries’ over-dependence on fish and soyabean as protein source for animal feed. Chanzi collects organic waste from households, farmers and industries and feeds the waste to larvae of Black Soldier Flies (BSF), an insect native to Tanzania. BSF are used as raw material to produce nutritious protein animal feed whereas its frass along with the remainder of organic waste is processed into nutrients and mineral-dense fertilizer.

Uganda

d.light provides household access to renewable light and energy

d.light, a UNCDF pipeline company, provides access to clean, safe, and affordable renewable light and energy to households in more than 70 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Its range of solar products, including solar lanterns and solar home systems, are available and affordable to low-income families by enabling financing using pay-as-you-go technology.

What are SDG Investor Maps?

The SDG Investor Maps generate country-level data and insights about SDG-enabling investment opportunities. The innovative tool targets the gap between interest and investing in SDGs and the business models that could provide impactful and investable opportunities.

The methodology for developing SDG Investor Maps consists of a rigorous eight-step process drawing on a combination of in-depth desk research and focused in-country public and private sector consultations. Through this iterative process, the SDG Investor Maps identify and validate where there is overlap between development needs and policy priorities, develop and test potential business models that fit the most urgent needs, and establish comprehensive data points spanning business and impact considerations.
